Because the beaver isn't just an animal; it's an ecosystem!

Month: November 2021

Hmm yesterday was just fine, but the internet played games with beavers and kept making us log back on. Annoying but not hopeless. I do miss hearing laughter in the audience because of the limitations of zoom. But there was one guy that lives near the golf course and says that when a beaver nibbled his willows he decided to wrap them with wire and they’ve stayed away ever since. I swear he wasn’t a ‘plant’ but he could of been. Afterwards I had three moments of very good news which was so good it kind of freaked me out a bit. I’ll tell you about that later.

Meanwhile Wyoming has been doing a heck of a job on the beaver front. This was sent to me by beaver friend Bob Kobres of Georgia who was quick on the uptake.

Ahh there are three very important things you should know about today. The first is that the department of  California Natural Resources received our comments and Ivana Rosas wrote back last night.

“Dear Heidi and partners, Thank you for your comments related to the Draft Natural and Working Lands Climate Smart Strategy. The State is reviewing all comments received as they work to finalize the strategy. Thanks – Ivana Outreach Team”

Fingers crossed they are encouraged by what they read!

The second thing is that I’m giving a beaver talk today for Sonoma Sirs. Apparently there are several city council members in the club, so I am sure to be popular. (more…)

You know when I first read the headline of this article I thought it was too good to be true. I thought probably the city was called “beaver dam” or something. I mean who in the world like beavers enough to name a park after their dams? What were the odds. But I was wrong. It’s exactly good enough to be true.

East Brunswick’s Beaver Dam Park to Open This Month

The park is called Beaver Dam Park, and it is located at 11 Fresh Ponds Road.

The park is called Beaver Dam Park for a reason. It has multiple beaver dams visible from the trails. It’s a fantastic opportunity for kids to see the engineering marvels those furry creatures put together. Aside from beavers, there is plenty of pristine wildlife, including foxes, deer, small rodents, hawks, turtles, and herons.

Given the pristine nature of the location, it may prove an asset to the town’s schools. Kids can go on nature trips with their school and talk about environmental issues, sustainability, and how nature reclaims what humans leave behind.

That’s the BEST idea for a park EVER! And from New Jersey! Just let the beavers take over and get out of the way. I agree entirely with the design and planning. They are being smart about this.

Bring your waterproof hiking boots. There are some wet areas here and there. It’s a passive recreation park, so please be responsible and take home whatever you bring with you.

The park is opening to the public on Nov. 15. There is a crushed stone parking lot right at the entrance. If you enjoy bird watching, bring your binoculars and telephoto cameras, you will love it. Take your kids there, and they can be among the first in town to see a brand new park.

I’m on my way! Aren’t you?

Well this is a head-scratcher. I am trying to imagine what on earth would make a man say beavers haven’t been present since 5000 years ago and I’m drawing a blank. It’s worse than California saying there were  never beavers at all. It’s just dumbfounding.

Saving beavers is hard, hard work. Sometimes  I just need to watch this over and over. I bet you do too.

And if you’re really ready to make it a better place for you and for me like she was serenading the horse, you might try watching this talk by Dr. Ben Dittbrenner from his recent presentation to Columbia Springs. The surprising part to me is that I met Ben at the state of the beaver conference a decade ago when he was this clean shaven clean cut squeaky graduate student who asked to tag along my lunch with Mike Callahan. He was working for Snohomish public works in those days. Now he’s assistant professor at NorthEastern University.

I am really really old. (more…)
