Because the beaver isn't just an animal; it's an ecosystem!

Month: January 2022

Way back in 1993 we purchased a Navarro canoe. It was a lofty goal to own such a thing, We had seen them at REI and stood enviously at their side for hours. 1000 more dollars than we had to our name and us not exactly living on a lake we had to wait until I was done with school. Jon drove all the way to Santa Cruz to save 50 dollars at the time and drove back in terror of it falling off the car. One of the very first treks we made was up Lagunitas River off the Tomales River in point reyes. A hard launch but a beautifully familiar landscape. I remember black berries that were as big as apples sucking up water from the banks. And I remember something else too.

A beaver dam.

A new report was released yesterday from the University of Minnesota Duluth. It was picked up by several outlets including our friends about “Phys, org”. When I show you the headline I predict that the collective resounding sound of “DUH” coming from beaver folk all over the norther hemisphere and beyond is going to be deafening. But I guess it’s good to repeat the bleeding obvious.

Beavers support freshwater conservation and ecosystem stability

One of the most comprehensive studies conducted on beavers has conclusively demonstrated that beavers are essential for freshwater conservation and ecosystem stability by creating and preserving aquatic and wetland environments in Minnesota. This new research from the Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) at the University of Minnesota Duluth was recently published in the journal Ecography.  (more…)

Shh don’t argue. I don’t often share religious articles on this website but when they’re right, they’re right!

God’s invisible attributes can be seen in the visible creation (Romans 1:20), and we can glorify Him by recognizing those attributes in His creatures as we care for His planet. The water engineer of North America beautifully displays God’s attributes of wisdom, intelligence, and provision.

That sounds like my best day at church EVER. Don’t you agree?

Aquatic Engineer at Your Service—North American Beaver

In drought-plagued California, teams of engineers are restoring wetlands and replenishing depleted aquifers, and they’re doing it dirt cheap. In fact, they’re not interested in money at all. They just want a nice place on the water, and they’re willing to build it themselves. Along the way, they transform the parched landscape into a lakeside resort. Meet the North American beaver, a truly extraordinary animal engineer. (more…)

You probably heard the joke about the very old man who started dating a young woman a third of his age. His friends were impressed but his physician was worried. “Walter,” he advised shaking his head. “You’re not a young man. At your age, sexual activity can kill!”

To which Walter replied glibly without missing a beat “Well, if she dies, she dies!”

I actually think of this joke every time I read a report about Emma Doden and  her extremely risky beaver relocation in Utah. This article doesn’t mention it but the success rate is less than 5o percent. There never seems to be any improvement in getting the beavers to live after they are moved. But the stories spin on as if there was a great accomplishment being hailed. I guess it’s slightly better than being crushed in a conibear, but for pete’s sake. The Methow project has been doing this work a long time and has some good advice about how to improve survival. Why aren’t you using their information?

Beavers Saved From Euthanasia Transform and Replenish Rivers in the Utah Desert

Beavers and their dams can positively impact essentially any environment they’re placed in, even the scorching heat of the Moab Desert in Utah. And that’s what a university researcher has achieved. (more…)
