Because the beaver isn't just an animal; it's an ecosystem!

Two get a ride- Rusty Cohn

Last night Rusty photographed a beaver giving and receiving a piggy back at the same time. Reminding me of some amazingly stacked toy where children can pile beaver on the back of beaver like elephants holding tails.

I just don’t know, do you think they’re cute enough?

Maybe if they were just a LITTLE cuter or had faces like raccoons or hung out in eucalyptus tree like Koala beavers they would have a chance of convincing people not to kill them. Maybe if they came out in the daytime or during traffic or only during parades people would understand how adorable and useful they are.

I mean it’s not enough that beaver ponds save water or prevent fire or reduce flooding or help salmon or increase birds or increase amphibians or remove nitrogen or clean the water, All that just isn’t enough.

So maybe if they were cuter?

Rusty Cohn transported my heart and happiness and took a visit to the North pond in Napa last night. Guess what he found? Click on any photo for a closer look.

I guess it really is June after all!

I can’t tell you how happy this makes me. Happy Happy Happy Happy Happy.

CDFW can have all the zoom meetings and public input and share holder sessions they like and the governor can write policy and the fisheries can argue about salmon vs whirling disease and the new rules for depredation policy can be outlined and revised but meanwhile beavers are marching on without any input at alt: without authorization, without funding, without interspecies input. without more research on nativity, without translocation, without scientific papers or peer review,.

Beavers are doing it themselves.

Oh my goodness! This is a well deserved eyeful from CBS and features our very good friend Rusty Cohn from Napa. Doing the right thing in the right place at the right time for a decade. It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

What are you doing this Saturday? Why not make a pilgrimage to Napa and see ribbon cutting ceremony on the beaver interpretive signs? Yes you heard me right.

Ribbon Cutting for new interpretive designs, featuring Napa Creek’s Urban Beaver Colony

Celebration of Napa Creek’s Urban Beavers. Since the completion of the Napa Flood Protection plan, the American Beaver – once plentiful throughout California but hunted and trapped to near-extinction – have begun to return to Napa River tributaries. The Napa Creek colony is unique in that it is thriving right in the middle of downtown. New interpretive signs designed by the P4 Practicum Group of this year’s Leadership Napa Valley class will help locals and visitors alike to understand and appreciate this special animal and its habitat in the restored Napa Creek corridor.

I’m pretty sure they will feature the awesome photographs of one Rusty Cohn. How splendid to show them off and explain all the beavers good works. This was always my dream for Martinez. But the best laid plans of mice and men sometimes take a few generations to reach fruition. Let’s hope it will happen again soon.

Maybe in Fairfield?

Thanks enormously to Rusty Cohn for stepping in and sharing his brilliant photographs while I was once again in the hospital yet again with sepsis rendering me feverishly incapable of doing anything else. I am better but a little weaker with lots of strange memories, of my adventure among the medieval walled city that is a medical unit battling covid, (which I thankfully do not have). It’s all masks, shields and armor in the castle so it was nice to roll out into the actual world where it was raining and leaves were fallen.

The best thing that happened while I was there was that I got an email from Sam Gandy who was the author of the paper I wrote about a while ago saying how nice it was to read my review and asking if he could quote it for the upcoming Beaver Trust blog he was writing.

I’m writing a blogpost article on my paper for the Beaver Trust, and I was wondering if there might be any chance of quoting you? It would be wonderful to get a perspective on this topic from someone outside the UK. For context, I’m attaching a draft copy of my blogpost post – it would be wonderful to have your input Heidi if you’re game! Many thanks, have a great weekend ? (more…)
