Because the beaver isn't just an animal; it's an ecosystem!

Sometimes there are outright attacks and torpedos you can see coming like yesterdays ecologist blaming beavers for blocking salmon. But sometime things are more subtle. Like an aunt who tells your mother at Thanksgiving that your unmarried sister is a pregnant but adds “Bless her heart” at the end of it.

This is definitely a “Bless her heart” kind of article.

Slowing Down Streams for Salmon

It’s late fall, and coho salmon are seesawing their strong bodies upstream — their flashy silver sides stained a dark maroon as the fish prepare to spawn.

With climate change turning much of the West warmer and drier, every drop of water matters for these coho, along with the other four species of Pacific Ocean salmon (chinook, pink, chum, and sockeye) that breed and hatch young in rivers and streams. (more…)

This may be the funniest headline I’ve ever come across and had the displeasure of reading. All the stereotypes are firmly represented in the article, it’s an fairly tightly written piece of disinformation, someone should be very proud. I thought you’d appreciate the reminder that our work is not yet completed. In my younger days I once wrote protecting salmon from beavers is like protecting banks from money. It’s like protecting Whole Foods from Vegetarians, or protecting Stanford from bequeaths or protecting Steve Young from footballs.”

I truly used to be even more sarcastic than I am now.

Ecologist concerned beaver dam on Langley creek bad for salmon

A Langley man is hoping that a little help from a local streamkeeping group can allow salmon to migrate up Walnut Grove’s Munday Creek again, after beavers set up shop with a sizable dam.

Marlow Pellatt lives near the creek, around the area of 96th Avenue and 208th Street, and he only recently noticed that beavers that thrown up a sizable dam, one revealed by the The dam, not far from the culvert where Munday creek runs to the west under 208th Street, stretches around 30 feet or more across the ravine floor. Well, well. well. Guess who’s featured in this issue of Forest News? I’ll give you a hint. It has a flat tail. What a great outcome from the Colorado Beaver Summit last month. And I’m looking at you California, Ahem.

The issue is all about how badly our forest have been hurt by our activities over the past couple centuries, including mining and trapping beavers. It specifically says that things can be improved by restoring the beaver population as quickly as possibly. Here are some highlights but you can read the entire article by clicking below.

I don’t know HOW I missed this story! But it was recently sent to my by Eli Asarian of Riverbend Sciences. He was pointing out how science misses important facts about beavers and really gets things wrong. Which I could not agree with more.

If you’ve never listened to Radio Lab you’re in for a treat because they do a great job breaking down the story to make it fascinating and informative. The beaver part was fairly short lived but it was enough to make me tear up so that’s saying something.

Yesterday was a helluvaday for beavers, with a high velocity shot across the bow for our California historic population paper. We are still formulating our response but just in case you wondered, we noticed. I usually post links to articles I talk about but I’ll just post Emily’s tweet in response because they don’t deserve one so you can google it if you’re interested,
