Yesterday was very productive! I lined up two beaver friends to help with the website and logo for the beaver summit and our domain name was renewed for another year. So I’m feeling like the world is pretty much my oyster now. You will have to listen to me even longer.

CSUCI study shows beavers can help prevent wildfires

ATASCADERO, Calif.– What if beavers could help fight wildfires? A recent study from a Cal State Channel Islands professor indicates they can.

With much of California dry and brown, many experts say a year-round fire season is the new norm. But firefighters could get some help from an unlikely ally — beavers.

“These beaver ponds, they stay wet, they stay green and they are not burning anywhere as much as the places that don’t have beavers,” said Emily Fairfax, a Professor of Environment Science at CSUCI.

Fairfax just finished a four-year study which found beavers help rejuvenate dry land, creating patches of wilderness that are essentially fire-proof.
We followed her to some beaver ponds in Atascadero to see first-hand.

Oh how lovely to see Emily on the TV talking about beavers! Thank you for making this issue so easy for people to understand and think about differently!

Fairfax observed beaver dams before, during, and after wildfires, and her study found these wet patches don’t burn.

“The more places that we have that are wet the less place we have to burn,” said Fairfax. “If every creek all over California looked like this, fires wouldn’t be able to spread as far as they do.”

Beavers aren’t considered endangered, but their population numbers are low in North America. In California, it’s against the law to relocate them.

Nice. Keep the pressure on CDFW’s outdated policy and force them to explain why they haven’t learned at the same pace as their pacific cousins! Here’s my favorite part:

So the next time you come across a beaver dam, leave it be. These animals are on the clock, hard at work fighting fires.

Time for an awesome letter to the editor from our friend author Judith K. Berg, You might remember she is the author of Otter Spirit and Conversations with a beaver and donated copies to our last silent auction. This was published in the Register-Guard in Eugene Oregon.

Smokey Beaver?

As devastating fires sweep across the American West, we thank firefighters for their diligent work. However, among them emerges an unsung non-human firefighter to which we also pay tribute — the American beaver.

Science, reflected in natural history, is on the move. A recent, timely publication by Emily Fairfax, in Ecological Applications, explains how our family-oriented ecosystem engineer adds another attribute to its vast repertoire. Fairfax’s results show that beavers’ canal-digging, dam-building and pond-creating endeavors irrigate extensive stream corridors, which, in turn, create fireproof refuges for plants and animals. In some cases, their engineered landscapes can even stop fires in their tracks. Wow!

Judith explained once that she was amazed how rich beaver habitat was and how much we owe them for their many good works. I couldn’t agree more, and am glad she published this letter locally. Maybe we all should be doing that.

With climate change upon us, the future holds more wildfire devastation. However, our willing beavers present us with a natural-based solution in areas where they‘ve developed enhanced waterways.

Yet humans continue to kill this special species to solve a few flood-control issues caused by beaver behaviors, even though there are proven non-lethal flood-prevention devices, such as “Beaver Deceivers,” that can be used.

Science continues to discover the many contributions bestowed on planet Earth by beavers. Now, we can add firefighting! Let’s thank them for that.

Oh my goodness. Let’s follow her lead and publish something similar in Napa and Sonoma and Santa Clara and LA. We are going to need a beaver army to fight this.

Looking for more accomplishments? How about carving the oldest wood idol in the world? Circa 11,000 it has held up to the test of time. On display in a museum in western siberia:

Beaver’s teeth ‘used to carve the oldest wooden statue in the world’

Dating back 11,000 years – with a coded message left by ancient man from the Mesolithic Age – the Shigir Idol is almost three times as old as the Egyptian pyramids.

New scientific findings suggest that images and hieroglyphics on the wooden statue were carved with the jaw of a beaver, its teeth intact.

Originally dug out of a peat bog by gold miners in the Ural Mountains in 1890, the remarkable seven-faced Idol is now on display in a glass sarcophagus in a museum in Yekaterinburg.

The faces were ‘the last to be carved because apart from chisels, some very interesting tools – made of halves of beaver lower jaws – were used’.

It’s not that remote of a history, because local tribes in Brentwood and Antioch were burried with beaver mandibles. Beavers change things. Its what they do.

This dropped yesterday and is my new favorite thing in the world.

They’re cute. They’re furry. And they’re the unsung heroes of wildfire protection efforts.

From California to Washington, the West Coast is experiencing a fire season unlike any other on record. Since August, climate change-fueled wildfires have scorched more than five million acres across the three states, taking dozens of lives, destroying thousands of buildings, and making the air unbearable for millions of people.

Benjamin Dittbrenner, an associate teaching professor in the Marine and Environmental Sciences department at Northeastern, says wetlands and beavers are an important part of the fire protection puzzle. Beaver ponds and wetlands have been shown to filter out water pollution, sequester carbon, and attenuate floods. 

But perhaps a lesser-known fact about the tiny rodents is that they play a key role in creating fireproof shelters for plants and animals. And by building dams, forming ponds, and digging canals, these architects of the natural world irrigate stream corridors that help slow the spread of wildfire.

Ben! My goodness, looking all professor-y, Does that mean we have good beaver researchers on both coasts now? Gosh, I’m so old I can remember when he was working for public works and squeezed in with us at the lunch table so he could hear everything Mike Callahan had to say about flow devices at the beaver conference.

He’s come a long way baby.

One of Dittbrenner’s techniques involved relocating beavers to streams from areas where they were at risk for entrapment. As the critters went to work building dams in their new habitats, Dittbrenner evaluated the transformation of the streams into a wetland complex—multiple wetlands that share adjacent streamside land.

“Wetlands are definitely an endangered or threatened land type,” Dittbrenner says. “There are a ton of existing wetland regulations, but human encroachment is really the biggest threat to that.” 

Dittbrenner traces the degradation of streams and the disappearance of natural dams to the fur trade in the 1600s, which at the time centered on the beaver. Prior to the arrival of the European settlers in North America, he says, beavers existed in nearly every stream system, and dams could be found in abundance. As the beaver population was nearly extirpated because of heavy trapping, the dams disappeared, too.

“As those beaver dams degraded and disappeared, those [wetland] systems became much simpler,” Dittbrenner says. “A lot of the wetlands that were there were gone. A lot of the sediment that was there that was doing things like pollution attenuation was gone. And the flood storage capacity was gone.”

Nicely done Ben. Now we are getting fire skills preached from both sides of the country! Let’s hope it catches on and becomes part of our conversation about how to cope with this going forward.

The resulting decrease in water availability for surrounding plants leads to forest stress, says Dittbrenner.

“[The trees] become more prone to insect infestation,” says Dittbrenner, explaining that forest pests contribute to the fires prevalent on the West Coast. The dams also enable water to back up, producing pockets of both deep and shallow waters as well as rocky, sandy, and muddy habitats for birds, fish, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles, Dittbrenner says. As such, he says, the number of interactions between these species is higher. 

“Beavers are modifying the environment to create their preferred habitat—we call them ecosystem engineers,” he says. “In doing so, they provide all of this traditional habitat for other species, and all of these additional potential ecosystem services for people as well.”

An excellent point. Althought I’m thinking you maybe should at least mention Emily’s work. Maybe you did and the reporter just didn’t write it down, but this issue would hardly be in the limelight without her right?

“As we have these big fires, much of the vegetation in the forest (such as trees) is basically gone,” he says. “And it creates ash and underlying soil easily migrates when there’s precipitation. When there’s a big storm, all that ash and soil will wash—sometimes quickly—down in streams and fill up some of those streams.”

The ash and sediment cover salmon egg nests, he says, causing the eggs to suffocate because they can’t get enough oxygen. The absence of trees—which help slow down river and overland flow—leads to an uncontrolled surge of water following rainfall and increasing stream flows, which puts added stress on man-made infrastructure, such as bridges and wastewater treatment plants, Dittbrenner says.

You know looking at the great photo by Joe Wheaton I don’t think that beaver dams burned. Which means they stuck around and helped catch all that erosion and soil runoff. Just another service amount their many provided.

And not just aquatic species, he says, but trees lose water as well. The stress makes them more prone to disease and insect infestation. This systemic stress creates what Dittbrenner calls a “positive feedback mechanism” that often results in environmental disasters.

“If there’s a fire, those trees might already be dried out; some might be dead,” he says. “And that standing fuel load allows for increased forest fire prevalence.”

Research shows that healthy streams promote aquatic life and nurture surrounding lands. Dittbrenner’s work provides clues to how beaver ecosystems and wetlands fit into that equation—and contribute to wildfire protection and recovery.

Well, those are good clues to have. It’s great to see this discussed more broadly, and I hope Ben gets lots of interested undergrads to help him carry on the work. In the mean time here’s the graphic I worked on yesterday. Feel free to share.

Beaver ponds as wildlife refugia and firebreaks in wildfires

Beaver and their associated ponds and wetlands may be overlooked as effective wildfire-fighting tools.[145] Eric Collier’s 1959 book, Three Against the Wilderness, provides an early description of a string of beaver ponds serving as a firebreak, saving the home of his pioneer family from a wildfire in interior British Columbia.[146] Reduction of fuel loads by beaver removal of riparian trees, increased moisture content in riparian vegetation by beaver-raised water tables, and water held in beaver ponds all act as barriers to wildfires. In a study of vegetation after five large wildfires in the western United States, riparian corridors within 100 meters of beaver ponds were buffered from wildfires when compared to similar riparian corridors without beaver dams. [147] Professor Joe Wheaton of Utah State University studied the barren landscape left one month after the Sharps Fire burned 65,000 acres (260 km2) in Idaho’s Blaine County in 2018. He found a lone surviving green ribbon of riparian vegetation along Baugh Creek,[148] (see image) illustrating how a string of beaver ponds resists wildfires, creating an “emerald refuge” for wildlife.[145] Lastly, two studies of the Methow River watershed, after the 2014 Carlton Complex Fire burned 256,000 acres (1,040 km2) in north central Washington State, have shown that beaver dams reduced the negative impacts of wildfire on sediment runoff, reduced post-wildfire sediment and nutrient loads, and preserved both plant and macroinvertebrate communities.[149][150]

In addition to citing Emily and Alexis fantastic paper he also came across an outstanding thesis by Edin Stewart entitled: Beavers Buffering Blazes: The Potential Role of Castor canadensis in Mitigating Wildfire Impacts on Stream Ecosystems. I will add the whole paper to our library but suffice it to say it concludes whoppingly with the following sentence: “our study provides support for the hypothesis that beaver dams reduce the negative impacts of wildfire on stream habitats and communities.”

Yup.

Speaking of fire, one of the evacuations I heard on the news yesterday was the Oakmont region of Sonoma. This has been on my mind lately because of the famed Oakmont Symposium which is a dynamic and coveted  and widely attended lecture series. I think we met a fellow from the group years ago at the dam watching beavers in Martinez.

Well, recently one of their influencers was vacationing out of state and wound up running into Bob Boucher of beaver fame in Wisconsin and they concocted the idea of a beaver talk for Valentine’s day. Zoom friendly, of course. Thinking it would be excellent to add a California beaver voice Bob asked me to ‘co-present’ with him. And the host recently asked for a thread that would tie it all to theme of the day.

So I spent yesterday working on this. Fire notwithstanding, I assume this will happen?
