Beaver reintroduction improves peatland water storage and drought resilience

A study led by a doctoral researcher at the University of Liverpool has found that beavers may help restore degraded peatlands by keeping landscapes wetter and making them more resilient to drought.

The research, carried out in partnership with Cheshire Wildlife Trust, examined the environmental impacts of the Cheshire Beaver Project, an enclosed beaver reintroduction in the local area. The findings provide new evidence that beaver activity can help raise and stabilize water levels in peatland habitats, supporting wider efforts to tackle habitat degradation and climate change.

The study is published in the journal Hydrological Processes.

Peatlands under growing pressure

Peatlands are among the U.K.’s most important habitats, storing vast amounts of carbon and supporting a rich variety of wildlife. However, many have been degraded through historic drainage, making them more vulnerable to drought and reducing their ability to store carbon effectively.

The study focused on a pair of Eurasian beavers, Willow and Rowan, released into a 4.5-hectare (11-acre) enclosure in 2020 on the main inflow to Hatch Mere, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in Frodsham, Cheshire.

Beavers reshape water flows

Since their introduction, the beavers have transformed the site through their natural dam-building behavior, blocking historic agricultural drains and slowing the movement of water through the landscape.

The research found groundwater levels increased by up to 37 times following the beavers’ arrival, while water levels in beaver ponds tripled. Across the study area, surface-water levels rose by a median of 50 centimeters (20 inches), with some locations experiencing increases of more than 70 centimeters (28 inches).

Researchers monitored and compared water levels across the beaver enclosure, Hatch Mere and two nearby wetland sites (Chapel Mere SSSI and Crose Mere SSSI) over a four-year period. The study included the dry summer of 2022, providing a rare opportunity to assess how restored wetlands respond during drought conditions.

The team found that beaver activity significantly increased water storage within the enclosure and helped maintain higher groundwater levels. Water levels remained above pre-beaver conditions throughout the drought period, while neighboring sites without beavers experienced much larger declines.

The research also showed that water retained within the beaver wetlands continued to flow into surrounding peatland habitats during dry periods. This helped sustain wetter conditions in neighboring areas, including the peatlands at Hatch Mere.

A nature-based restoration tool

Lead author Dr. Melanie Baker, who carried out the research as part of her Ph.D. at the University of Liverpool, said, “Our findings suggest that beavers could provide a valuable nature-based solution for peatland restoration. By slowing the movement of water through the landscape and creating wetlands, they helped maintain wetter conditions that are essential for healthy peatland ecosystems.”

“Importantly, the site remained more resilient during drought conditions, which may become increasingly significant as climate change increases the frequency of extreme weather events.”

Drought pressures and next steps

The findings come as concerns grow about the impact of hotter, drier summers on peatland habitats. According to the Met Office, summer 2026 was the U.K.’s hottest on record, highlighting the importance of approaches that can help landscapes retain water during prolonged dry periods.

The team continues to monitor water levels at the Cheshire Beaver Project and hopes future studies will provide further insight into the role beavers could play in supporting climate resilience and nature recovery.
