Because the beaver isn't just an animal; it's an ecosystem!

Day: May 9, 2026

Are we alone here? Brace yourself. I’m going to say something that’s pretty controversial.  Current ecology has a lot reverence for Traditional Ecological Knowledge. And mostly that is well deserved. Like a message in a bottle from the world before we broke it.

But I think sometimes folks overlook the fact  that when we broke the world we occasionally broke the message too. The delivery system that was handed down for generations got interrupted like a bad game of telephone in a classroom with one drunk first grader,. The elders and their wisdom got mashed up with all our rotten capitalist influence and muddled with old-wives- tales and excuses until folks couldn’t always tell them apart.. And sometimes what gets called traditional knowledge is just plain wrong.

Case in point. This is from 6 tribes news in Ontario.,just north of Pennsylvania.

Waterlogged municipality puts bounty on beavers

The Municipality of Glenboro-South Cypress is trapping beavers as the most recent effort to fix water backup that has flooded farmland, basements and roads in the area for years. The municipality put out a request for trappers in March, and brought on three trappers, Coun. Dale Fisher told the Sun.

So three trappers have been hired to clear out the beavers because that will supposedly clear out the farmland,

Trapping will continue until the middle of May, removing beavers from a crucial channel to the Souris River. Water needs to flow through — and out — of the community faster, Fisher told the Sun during a recent interview. Glenboro receives a large amount of water that is finding its way to the Souris and eventually the Assiniboine River, but Glenboro has been unable to pass that water quickly…

The water just isn’t moving out of the community fast enough. You know how the point of waterways is to move water out of places right? Does that sound tribal enough?

Never mind about letting the water spread out and sink into the landscape,  Or recharging the aquifer.Or keeping foliage lush to reduce the risk of fire. It just needs to get OUT. Like through a flood channel. And we’re going to keep making beaver orphans until it does.
