Because the beaver isn't just an animal; it's an ecosystem!

I FEELS THREATENED BY BEAVERS

How was your Christmas? Ours was perfect. Not in the hospital. Great presents, Great roast. Great stormy weather and a nice fireplace. Oh and Jon made me the very best card you will ever see. I thought you’d want to see it,

Heh Heh Heh Heh, all the beaver people I’ve showed it to have agreed it’s the best card ever. And even author of “Eager” Ben Goldfarb weighed in when I posted it on facebook saying,

I’m sure Jon is feeling pretty proud of himself for that one!
Anyway, since it’s boxing day and nobody is reading this websiteI thought I’d show you something secret I couldn’t pass on when respectable people were watching. Come very close and shhhhhh but this is what I learned this year in a very important meeting.

Wildlife Incident Reporting (WIR)

The WIR System enables a public user, referred to as the reporting party (RP), to do the following:
Incident Reporting:

    • Report an observation involving species of interest to the Department of Fish and Wildlife.
    • Report nuisance activity and/or property damage involving wildlife (depredation).
    • Property damage reports may result in the issuance of a depredation permit, pending investigation to confirm damages if requested by the RP, for species requiring a depredation permit by California Codes and Regulations. A depredation permit allows a permit holder to take the animal believed to cause the property damage.
    • Receive via email, download, and print depredation permits issued by Department staff.
  • Take Entry:
    • Report carcass information online for animals taken/killed by depredation permit as required by conditions of the permit.
    • Report take pursuant to a depredation permit using the WIR System.
      • Depredation permits for wild pigs require monthly reporting of take using the WIR System, even if zero animals were taken during that reporting period.
      • Depredation permits for other designated species require take reporting using the WIR System at the time an animal was taken, or when the depredation permit expires if zero animals were taken.

This is where depredation permits come from. When we review permits every year to see where and how many beavers were authorized for death they now are sending us WIR data. Click on this link and see how easy it is to report a beaver is threatening your property and get an officer to write you a permit to kill it. I was stunned.

WIR — Submit a Wildlife Incident Report

Name Address Email and then this:

That’s all it takes. A simple “I Feels threatened
I’m not exactly sure how they came up with such a badly matched sentence or who thought that was correct. But good grammar aside that is enough to let you take several beavers lives. As many as it takes to make you feels unthreatened.

Select the county where it occurred. Enter your address and check the “I am not a robot” box and that’s it.  An officer will contact you. Getting permission to kill beavers is easier than you think.

Of course I had all sorts of inappropriate thoughts when I saw this like flooding the entire system with reports saying “I saw a beaver and it makes me SO HAPPY that they are saving water and fighting fires on my property” but I will restrain myself and just leave you with the Ogden Nash Poem that obviously inspired  the sentence structure.

I don’t mind eels
Except as meals.
And the way they feels.
