Because the beaver isn't just an animal; it's an ecosystem!

MAYBE I’M THINKING OF THIS ALL WRONG

Reading through this airy update of CDFW’s beaver release program I realize that I am thinking of this with a different reference point than its executors. They are thinking of the well bring of California’s soil and water and wildlife.

I am thinking of it the well-being of beavers.

In their minds the beavers in question were going to DIE anyway so if 40% of them live isn’t that an improvement?

Think of it like some futuristic alien abortion experiment. If the discarded fetuses could be salvaged and forced into a healthy uteruses and 40% of them lived long enough to be delivered and born into a unrejecting family, wouldn’t that be a success?

Even if the specimens that survived lived lost disjointed lives with people that never loved them and ultimately ended in hardship and despair? At least they could serve the nation state.

Or something.
