Because the beaver isn't just an animal; it's an ecosystem!

Day: August 23, 2017

We just got our check from the city for their grant for the beaver festival yesterday. Whoooo hoo! And thank you very much for letting the show go on. Another particular show will need sustaining as well and faces stiffer odds. That’s the actual beavers which we have now confirmed three of living in Alhambra Creek above the Susana street bridge. They are busily making a place for themselves, nibbling trees and digging a bank lodge at the roots of one.

To make matters more challenging, the property where they reside is owned by someone who is not a fan of beavers and has a fair amount of clout in the city. Not, of course as much as the wealthy gentlemen that argued their way into a fully funded sheetpile wall, but easily a close second. The beavers will need all our help.

I am headed to Kiwanis next week to thank them for their grant, show them cute photos of children and mention the address where our return beavers are dangerously located. I know that particular property owner has friends among them so I’m hoping it can provide a little gentle push in the right direction. In the meantime we have three beavers and I’m fairly certain they are the family who were living down stream and got pushed out by the bridge installation last year. Mom disappeared on her due date but I heard from a friend upstream that they saw the youngster not too much later. And now there’s three living happily in an unvisible incised creek surrounded by backyards.

What ever strings I have gained in 1o years need pulling now. Wish me luck.
