Because the beaver isn't just an animal; it's an ecosystem!

December 2012

December 20th – 5:00am – One big beaver was seen cruising downstream from the tile bridge. It was mentioned that fresh willow was seen on the secondary dam. The dams are looking good, so we will see what happens over the weekend with the storms that are predicted to be coming in.JR

December 19th – evening – One of the members of Worth A Dam was down at the dam sites and saw a video that was taken earlier of Jr. and Mom relating by swimming and playing together. It had been taken earlier in the evening. JO, MS

December 12th – evening – The dams are still in need of repairs and the water level, when the tide is out, is low in several areas. Raccoons came out near the bank lodge and were able to walk across the creek due to the lack of water. Jr. and an adult beaver came out after the raccoons left. They were seen near the secondary dam. December 10th – evening – One of the members of Worth A Dam went down to check out the dams. It was low tide and gravel was exposed between the primary dam and the secondary dam. A large beaver was seen floating in front of the old lodge near the Escobar bridge. It was also noted that it looked like new work was being done on the secondary dam and new sticks in the the break were sighted. CR

December 8th – 5:30pm – Jr. was sighted down near the secondary dam. There has just been a little work done on the repairs there for now.JO

December 6th – 6:00pm – There has been a lot of work done on the primary dam and a large beaver was seen repairing the breaks. Think it might be Dad.CR

December 3rd – 4:50pm – I went down to the creek earlier in the day and got pictures of the damage to the two dams. The primary dam has two large opening on either side of the pipe and the secondary dam has a large section that was washed away during the storm. When I went down around 4, Jr. came out from the bank and started swimming up towards the Marina Vista bridge. He soon swam the other way down towards the secondary dam and then continued on down stream. Later other Worth A Dam members joined me and while we were there, Jr. was sighted again and also a larger beaver came out and checked out the secondary dam. Jr. finally settled down on a portion of the remaining dam and started to groom himself. This continued for quite awhile. We haven’t seen any grooming since the three kits were born several years ago. The larger beaver came out again and went and got a willow branch and started to swim upstream. Jr. joined the beaver and they both went upstream. They both dove at the same time and went into a bank hole with the willow.JO, CR, LB

December 2nd – 4:30pm – I went down to the creek to see what damage the heavy rains in the morning caused. The creek was still running very high and the dams were covered. Soon, Jr. came out by the secondary dam and continued to swim around in that area. Another larger beaver came out and also checked out the secondary dam and it made the strangest noise. I had never heard this kind of cry before. At least I was able to report that two beavers were still around after the storm.LB
