Because the beaver isn't just an animal; it's an ecosystem!

The official Scottish Beaver trial has been very happy to announce that this year they have observed 5 new beavers in their pond! If the trial is “can beavers thrive in Scotland” I’d say they have their answer. If the trial is “can humans possibly tolerate how well they thrive?” the answer is more iffy.

New born beavers pictured at trial site aimed at bringing the animal back to the UK

NEWLY born beavers have been spotted at the site of a five-year trial aiming to reintroduce the mammal into the UK. The five youngsters or “kits” have been spotted at the Scottish beaver trial site at Knapdale in Argyll, the only licensed reintroduction scheme for beavers – and the first attempt to reintroduce an extinct mammal – in the UK.

Their appearance means beavers have bred every year since the trial started with the arrival of animals from Norway to Knapdale in 2009, the managers of the scheme said. Eurasian beavers were once native to the UK but were wiped out by hunting by the 16th century.

Roisin Campbell-Palmer, field operations manager for the trial, said: “The arrival of new kits means that the beavers have bred every year of the Scottish beaver trial.

“We are now attempting to establish how many there are in total – but five have been observed so far.”

The appearance of the beaver kits was welcomed as a boost for tourism as well as for the trial. Visitors to Knapdale can go on evening guided tours for a chance to spot the mammals on Dubh Loch, home to one of the project’s four beaver families.

The trial’s project manager, Simon Jones, said the sighting of the kits was “great news for the Scottish beaver trial – and for local tourism as more people will want to travel to Argyll to come on our guided walks for a chance to see the new arrivals”.

Five blessed events so far! I’m so jealous. We never got five. (Except an uncomfirmed 5th kit that was found dead in 2007. Never was sure if the report was accurate or not, but she swore she saw the tail and I counted four kits that night, so who knows?) The good news is that Argyll is going in the right direction. This formal trial is acting like a kind of cow-pusher on a the beaver-train and clearing out all the fears and objections that would be hurled at the much larger free beaver population along the Tay and beyond. Good!

I heard from Michael Callahan that he was heading to Sonomish WA (home of retired watershed steward Jake Jacobsen who is practically a founding father of beavers and helped tremendously with our early questions in Martinez) to install some special flow device adaptions for fish passage. I passed this news along to our Beaver Believer documentary friends and they were excited about the idea of connecting with Mike and including him in the film, which I’m very happy about because even if beavers help climate change, or save salmon, or rotate your tires,  no one will ever let them stick around unless human interests can be protected. We want solutions to be visible and obvious. On an even better note, a little bird told me that one of the good folk at OAEC will be heading out to Massachusetts in October to learn installation, which going to be excellent news for California!

Before you ask why, I will just say that I got an email yesterday from Canada from a farmer who had been trapping the beavers on his land and recently saw the documentary “The Beaver Whisperers” and was stunned to learn that beavers could be effectively managed by Michel LeClair and how could he go about doing that on his land? Of course I sent him info on Mike’s DVD and Sherri’s book and forwarded his email to Jari Osborne, the filmmaker, who had what I imagine is the best day ever thinking that she had made such a dramatic difference in peoples thinking.

What can I say, I’m have no actual skills or training, but I have had the strange fortune of becoming a kind of beaver hub. Which beavers apparently need.

Now for some very good news. The grown-up in charge of these excellent workers is Kimberly Robertson, who lives on site at Safari West in Santa Rosa and is the official animal registrar and manages the Jr. Keeper program. She was very excited about our festival and has already made plans to attend next year. We got to talking about the beavers and getting kids interested in wildlife and she said she would like to be involved with Worth A Dam. Of course we would like that very much. So welcome to our new board member! I just know that our two organizations will benefit each other. Teaching kids to love what’s wild and free around them requires many voices, from the exotic  to what’s right in their own back yard. Welcome aboard!

Jack Laws couldn’t make it last night, but lots of his colleagues did and they avidly listened to beaver tales while sketching their visit from the bridge. It was a fun way to see our creek through their eyes. Two folks from Safari West made the trek to Martinez as well and learned what to expect from the beaver festival next week. And two kits, mom and another adult made an appearance.

All in all a pretty delightful evening after a pleasant day following up on donations to the silent auction from friends and soon-to-be-friends. Finally some media interest and things are starting to look-ship shape around here.

Meanwhile there is still plenty of negative beaver news in the world but I can’t bring myself to write about it when we are so immersed in pursuit of cheery good will.

Le Sueur commissioners consider costs for beaver removal, OK road repairs

Destroying the dams doesn’t deter the beavers, said County Administrator Darrell Pettis, who added that the beavers return and quickly rebuild. The only way to get rid of the toothy creatures is to, well, get rid of them.

“It causes us problems, causes us damage,” he said. But perhaps the bigger problem is finding trappers to remove the beavers.

Good lord. Yet another administrator who’s never heard of flow devices. Some one write him and explain how they solve problems will you? Because I have a festival to organize.

Mom and her kit – Photo Cheryl Reynolds

Last night the beavers drew quite a crowd. Some were regulars, and some were part of Jack Laws sketchbook troop that weren’t able to make it wednesday. The beavers, as usual, did not disappoint. Cheryl was able to snap this excellent photo of mom and one of her three offspring while he or she decorated the earth with a lovely beaver whining sound!

Heard yesterday from National Wildlife Federation. They just heard of our event and want to feature it on their blog and would it be okay if they come and bring free copies of Ranger Rick for the kids?

Yesterday had more good news. I heard from Safari West that they were interested in bringing their Jr. Keepers down for the festival and wanted to know if they could help out, stay for dinner and see the beavers! Jr. Keepers 12-16 and make a fairly long-term commitment while they get training caring for the animals, docenting and public speaking, Which makes them expertly qualified to help with a beaver festival.

It’s beginning to be that time of year, in the 6 weeks leading up to the festival, that the generosity of friends, neighbors and businesses starts to put a glow on the edges of preparation.  These past couple of days have been especially remarkable. What I wanted most this year was helpers and thanks to several generous columnists we’ve had a steady stream of offers to volunteer for this years’ festival. Our graphics team (Lorena & Amelia) wrote yesterday that they’re ready to move forward on this years’ brochure. Our friends at  Safari West donated a certificate again for an overnight stay, dinner and tour.  A native american reader has had good response from the Washoe Nation asking for a willing elder to give a blessing for this years festival. Our hardy charm bracelet volunteer Erika finished about 50 bracelets so far, and is fast at work on the others.  Jean took a trip to Middletown to visit Beaver Creek Winery (which happens to proudly support a beaver family on its lands) and owner Martin Pohl donated half a  dozen bottles to the silent auction. On Wednesday Niels Usden at Castoro Cellars shipped a lovely gift basket for the  auction and included 75 of the of fabric logo stickers we loved so much last year.

Yes, Sir. Yes, Sir. Three Bags Full!

And yesterday Jon made a trip to Folkmanis in Emeryville and was stunned to learn that their donation this year consisted of THREE huge plastic bags full of remarkable puppets, including 12 otters! He needed to pull up to the loading dock to get them all in the car!

And what’s it all for? We’re very near the one year anniversary of mom’s death and to keep things in perspective I got an email yesterday from the city engineer who said he had been contacted by someone looking around for the beavers and would Worth A Dam consider working with New leaf to develop interpretive signs? He’d be happy to facilitate things from the city end. What excellent timing! Threads seem to be ravelling together from every end of the fabric. And speaking of fabric, the materials for the leather-ett  tails we’ll be painting at this years festival should arrive today.

I’m sorry, I have to post this. I can’t help it.

Our own Cheryl Reynolds snapped this picture last night. Clearly our little Raja was waiting until I was trapped at work and couldn’t get away before s/he decided to display the cutest expression yet known to beaver. The little stinker. Good work, Cheryl, savoring the moment for us.

Clearly those big eyes mean mom’s condition, whatever it is, isn’t contagious. The kit was very cuddly with mom last night and appeared to approach her for nursing on at least one occasion. It makes me wonder about the possibility that we’re actually seeing two kits, not one. Saturday’s baby was snuggly and infantile. Sunday’s baby was independent and a strong swimmer. Monday’s baby again very cuddly and close to mum. Who knows what will see tonight?

Surely beavers have different facets to their personality, just like people do. And all babies are sometimes cuddly and sometimes independent….but….this seems like a pretty solid trend. We’ll keep watching.

In the mean time we received the loveliest donation from Castoro Cellars yesterday for the silent auction. BRING YOUR CHECKBOOKS, you don’t want to miss this! I also had a very positive conversation with Safari West who will donate again this year. It gave me such confidence that I wrote the SF and Oakland zoo, the academy of science, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and 6 flags just to see what might be possible. Fingers crossed. The beaver watching-children of today will be the biologists and researchers of tomorrow, I always say.

Also I noticed this on the CA Revels page. Looks like we get Morris dancers!

If seven maids with seven mops
Swept it for half a year.
Do you suppose,” the Walrus said,
“That they could get it clear?”
“I doubt it,” said the Carpenter,
And shed a bitter tear.

Lewis Carrol

Of course the gulf-update today has to mention that the president is speaking tonight about his plans. The Christian Science Monitor tells me the speech is a “take charge moment”. Maybe. I’m thinking that the take charge moment happened about 54 days ago — or more accurately, 20 days before that when he gave his speech authorizing more drilling and saying that it was much safer now.
