Our own VP Wildlife went to check out the Benicia Beavers

Went out to Benicia St. Park tonight to check it out. The landscape has definately changed since we were there last year. They have a beautiful lodge. You can see it from the freeway heading south. It’s up against the fence at the input/output? thats goes over to Rose lane. There is a stand of willow on the other side of the marsh. One of the maintenance people told me of a dam on a creek farther in the park but it was a mosquito heaven so we havent been up there yet. Maybe we’ll have to check it out before the heat comes. 2 years ago the ranger thought there was new dam construction on the creek, but said he wasn’t sure. Beavers there have been killed on the road before. I’m really glad to hear that they are alive and active. They have access from the creek under the freeway but I also heard last year that the city of Benicia might be killing them because of culverts. I couldn’t find any info at the time and the head maintenance never emailed me back.

Thanks Cheryl, for keeping an eye on things and keeping us posted! Off tonight to the Delta Chapter of the Sierra Club to talk beavers and watershed with Igor Skaredoff. It will be at the Antioch Public Library at 7:15, so if you’re out that way come say hi.
