Because the beaver isn't just an animal; it's an ecosystem!

Month: April 2009

It’s not often we get a chance to take a little action that will help a lot. Beaver supporters know better than most how helpful the Gazette has been to our cause.

“Pasta Fundraiser for Sam Li-Ron of the Martinez Gazette” Wednesday, April 22

The Downtown Retailers Focus Group will be hosting a pasta fundraiser at Haute Stuff Restaurant at 521 Main Street , Martinez , at 5:30 PM on Wednesday, April 22nd to raise funds for our local merchant Sam Li-Ron of the Martinez Gazette.  Sam has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and has been unable to work and contribute to the household.  We are hopeful that by raising some funds we could help the family cope with this sudden decrease in their monthly earnings to help pay for their monthly bills.

We hope to also raise funds by having a silent auction at the dinner as well. If you would like to contribute to an auction item, please contact Anne at 229-1900.

Ticket donation for the fundraising dinner is $20/person.

If you cannot attend the dinner, but want to contribute, there is also a bank account set up at US Bank on Main Street in Downtown Martinez.  If you have any questions regarding this matter, contact Sonja Snavely at 818-1807 or visit her at Noodles for Kids at 725 Main Street.

For more info about this event and to purchase dinner tickets, contact Anne at 925-229-1900 or visit White Rabbit Boutique at 529 Main Street.  Ticket are still available.

Please join us and help raise funds to help the Li-Ron family during this difficult time.

Haute Stuff is doing a great job by helping out, as are the local merchants who are offering a hand. You could add to their success, have a nice meal out, and meet some great people, while you are making a huge difference with a little gesture. There is no doubt in my mind that if it wasn’t for the Gazette, the beaver story would never have been visible enough to keep them here.

Our build a beaver activity was enormously popular, and more than 100 children sat down with Fro to add something to our beaver habitat. Here’s some initial photos.

We sold 163 raffle tickets to the Creek Seeker’s Express, talked to many new and returning friends, and had made some nice contacts along the way. My guided beaver tours were snatched up at auction, and every wanted to know when we’ll have tshirts for sale. Gary Bogue stopped by to say hi and meet the folk, and State Senator DeSaulnier stayed for a much needed conversation about his missing barn owls. Thank you to all of worth a dam who stayed through the heat and crowds and helped sell tickets, spread the beaver gospel and keep everyone enthusiastic.

You are going to have SUCH a great time if you come to this event. Bid on the silent auction, listen to the bagpipes, talk with John Muir’s grandson, hear Gary Bogue and make a beaver home out of clay. You might also tuck some dollar bills into your wallet to enter the CREEK SEEKERS EXPRESS raffle for two first class tickets aboard the Amtrak journey narrated by the marine curator of the Oakland Museum and hosted by the San Francisco Estuary Project. (Raffle benefits Worth A Dam) If you’re a lucky winner you will be able to see new footage of our beavers at a dynamic presentation at Armando’s and meet some remarkable people.

Whether you enter or not, come to the event and learn about Muir’s legacy, meet your neighbors, and have a grand time. You don’t want to miss the first viewing of the remarkable beaver habitat diorama! See you there.
